De Quervain's subacute thyroiditis, a painful viral infection of the thyroid, causes temporary destructive hyperthyroidism, with low radioisotope uptake in the early phases of the disease. Treatment with simple analgesics is usually all that is required but in persistent cases, corticosteroids may be needed. Transient or, rarely, permanent hypothyroidism can develop.
